How to play the house price guessing game
Market Match is a daily house price guessing game in the spirit of Wordle. You see a home (its photos, size, age and neighborhood) and have 6 tries to guess its exact price.
The rules
- Look over the home: photos, bedrooms, bathrooms, square footage, year built and location.
- Enter a price on the 000,000,000 board, one digit per box. Every guess fills all 9 boxes.
- Each digit is scored on its own, then you guess again. You have 6 tries.
What the colors mean
5 Green: the right digit in the right place.
3 Yellow: within 2 of the right digit (a 3 when the answer is 5, say).
9 Gray: off by more than 2.
Because yellow means "close", you can home in on each digit: a yellow 3 means the real digit is 1 to 5.
Tips for guessing what a home is worth
- Start with price per square foot. Homes in expensive coastal cities often run $800 to $1,500+ per square foot; in many Midwest and Southern towns it's closer to $150 to $300.
- Get the first digits right first. Is it a $400,000 home or a $4,000,000 home? Leading zeros matter: $950,000 is 000,950,000.
- Location beats size. A small cottage on Nantucket can cost more than a mansion in a small Southern town.
- Land and views add value. Acreage, waterfront and mountain views push prices up; a fixer-upper pulls them down.
- Unique homes carry a premium. Converted churches, firehouses and architect-designed homes often sell above the neighborhood's usual price per square foot.
- Use the colors. After the first guess, keep greens, nudge yellows by 1 or 2, and swing grays by 3 or more.
Frequently asked questions
Is Market Match free?
Yes. The Home of the Day is free for everyone, every day. A free account saves your progress and puts you on the leaderboard, and Premium unlocks every other house and the archive of past homes.
How often is there a new house?
A new Home of the Day appears every day at midnight Eastern Time, and it's the same house for every player.
Are the homes real?
No. Every home is imagined for the game, with details and photos created with AI. Prices are realistic estimates based on typical home values in each neighborhood.
How do I enter a price like $750,000?
Every guess uses all nine boxes, so $750,000 is 000,750,000. Tap 000 to add three zeros at once.
How is my score calculated?
Solving a house in fewer guesses earns more points: 6 points for a first-try solve down to 1 point on the sixth try. Points add up on the leaderboard.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Market Match runs in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers.
